A Modern Winter Wonderland

Last night we took a walk over to Pioneer Square to see the big tree all lit up, grab a coffee and then head to dinner. It’s been chilly, and oh so fun to bundle up and wander around town looking at the stores that have gussied up for Christmas. Tis the season so I’m anxious to festivize our place as well, but the space is not very big so I’ve been pretty picky selecting decorations that are modern, fit with our urban style and have some character too. Here’s some of my favorite wintery embellishments that add a little magic with simple, fun and elegant designs.

Blik Chill Factor Wall DecalsFirst, and way fun, are Blik Chill Factor Wall Decals. I’ve posted about Blik decals before, and this retro snowman design is a hoot! You get to arrange these dudes on the wall however you like and make little circular snowflakes fall all around them. The kit comes with a red & white 23″ snowperson , two 7″/12″ snowpeople in red and white, six white 4″ round snowflakes, and two 8″ round snowflakes. This design makes me think of print or web graphics and has a very vectorish feel - maybe that’s cuz they’re circles. Very fun and very hip - all you need is a big blank wall and silly party guests to share them with.

Angel Feather WreathI so love the Angel Wreath. Who’d have thought a big fluffy wreath of white boa feathers would look so cool? And it really does look awesome. The Angel Wreath is perfect for indoor or outdoor use and adds such a fresh decorative element that doesn’t impose on the simplicity of a modern designed space. Elegant, festive and reminiscent of snowy hills and angel wings. This piece is a great example of how decorative does not have to mean gaudy.

Spiral Snowman OrnamentThe Spiral Snowman Ornament from MoMA is a unique design that’s a little bit holiday decoration and a little bit op-art. A brass ornament plated with tarnish-resistant palladium makes for a reflective sparkling addition to your winter holiday decor. Witness a bit of visual trickery when this snowman spins and plays with your perceptions. Designed by artist Katerina Ginzburg, this lasting ornament is available in Sphere, Icicle and Starburst designs as well.

Ornament CenterpieceThis is so cool! The Ornament Centerpiece is such a fantastic, contemporary way to decorate your holiday dinner table, buffet or credenza. With its polished silver finish, clean lines and simple design, this is such the perfect piece for a beautiful, modern space. You can purchase the red ornaments pictured to go along with it, or use your own. This clever display of glass ornaments elongates any rectangular or oblong surface and has just the right amount of dangle at staggering lengths to create a central focal point that’s balanced, but gratefully asymmetrical.

Snowflake DecalsIf the Blik decals aren’t quite your thing, or perhaps those might work for in one room in your place and these in another, consider the Snowflake Decals at Chiasso. These are great looking, especially on darkly painted surfaces. A classy decoration that is a sure way to make your winter white - at least inside your home. Made of a self-adhesive vinyl that sticks to windows, walls and most hard floors, these snowflakes come in a set that includes nine 3″ snowflakes, four 7″ snowflakes, and two 15″ snowflakes.

Snowflake CoastersAnd for even more snowflake action check out the Snowflake Coasters available in four fun color combinations of ultrasuede fabric. Functional and festive these coasters are the finishing touch for your holiday party. These will not disappoint and will protect your surfaces from drips of eggnog. Contemporary and simple unassuming design that is cheerful and colorful. Also, a great gift idea for the entertainer.

Optik WreathOkay, here’s a wreath that’s totally mod - the Optic Wreath. I imagine this to be about the closest thing to having Joshua Davis design a holiday wreath - his would likely involve more color, but hey. I’m definitely liking the white on white going on in this picture anyway. Made of varying sizes of powder-coated steel discs, the Optic Wreath is a decorative piece that’s sure to catch the attention of many discerning eyes. I’m reminded of movie scenes where falling snow is shown, the focus blurs, and the snowflakes become falling circular shapes of varying sizes and distances from the lens. A perceptive association? With that comparison, this wreath would definitely be interpreted to be a blizzard.

Mercury Glass Votive HoldersAnd to make the place sparkle with shimmers of color and flickering candle light, I recommend the Mercury Glass Votive Holders from West Elm. These have a chrome-like finish on the outside and festive colors on the highly reflective inside. Choose from 3 color schemes: gold and green, red and pink or silver and blue. These are favorites because they’re classy, modern and add gorgeous shades without over colorizing the space with little glass votive holders everywhere. Instead you can have abundant candlelight with sleek pops of warmth and shine.

Side note: I got excited when I saw “Joshua Davis.” I started wondering what DJ Shadow’s idea of a holiday wreath would be, and that picture wasn’t necessarily what I had in mind. Then I clicked the link and realized I was an idiot.

That’s all I had to say.

    :-)

I’ll call you sometime when I’m less swamped with school . . . I hear all is well with y’all and that’s good to hear.

haha Hizzle, yeah Josh Davis - last I’ve seen his design sense was limited to being surrounded by crates of records, and though impressive and abundantly circular - he’s only similar to Joshua Davis in independence and originality. Finish your shite - we’ll talk soon I hope…

    Hello,
Moma is no longer carrying the sphere ornament, do you know how I can get in touch with Katerina or another supplier?

Sphere Ornament by Katerina Ginzburg mentioned above.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    Cheryl

Unfortunately I don’t know of any other place that sells those ornaments. You might try getting in touch with MoMA. Perhaps they will add something new to their collection for the coming season.

    Good luck!
