Did you ever build forts inside the house as a kid? What’d you use - sheets or blankets? a few chairs? I used sofa cushions. My parents had this sectional with these big square cushions that stacked on each other in the same way you can make three playing cards stand up - kinda like Stonehenge actually.

Thinking back it was a bit more like a dog house than a impressive fortress, but it was my sanctuary, and to me it was nearly palatial. I’d turn on some of Dad’s Huey Lewis, flip through one of my Zoobooks magazines, let my little sister share the fun with me on occasion, or subject one of my cats to cohabitation (usually against her own will). To me the forts were the perfect pinch of privacy because so much of my experience was in my imagination.

Ball ChairFast forward seventeen years and the innovative Ball Chair is is now my choice for in-home imagination-inspiring seclusion. Designed by Eero Aarnio in 1967 the Ball Chair was really his fulfillment of his own need for a big chair in his new apartment with one self-made stipulation, the design had to be a “really new one”. A few years later this chair had made him an internationally known designer and inspired other projects using fiberglass and the sphere. The original is still in Aarnio’s home and he even installed a red telephone inside it.

Another fantastic tidbit about this chair (other than the fact that it swivels too!) is that it comes in a variety of shell and fabric colors giving you the opportunity to personalize a legendary chair. Oh yeah - and it’s gorgeous. Love it!
